VIEWS: The Garden

A Dispatch from SSC Intern Wendy Tng

I watched the documentary film The Garden recently. Set in Los Angeles, it looks at the development of the largest community farm in the United States. After the LA riots, a 14-acre community farm was established in South Central Los Angeles.

The film presents a moving story of an unexpected community of farmers in this city, as real estate developers and government officials battle them to reclaim the land for more profitable purposes.  Interviewing farmers, activists and politicians as the South Central Farmers face eviction, it’s a sharp, sensitive look at community farming and the political and economic realities that threaten its existence.

Is the farm still operating?
